The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS) provides quality, compassionate, and safe health care to veteran patients throughout 23 parishes in southeast Louisiana. In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans VAMC was devastated. The Health Care System was reorganized to meet the needs of veterans and now consists of six community-based clinics located in New Orleans, Slidell, Hammond, St. John Parish, Houma, and Baton Rouge. Eighty percent of patients live within thirty minutes of primary and mental health services. Specialty care is available through the New Orleans and Baton Rouge clinics, and inpatient services are coordinated through community facilities and other Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. Programs are available for special needs populations including those with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Spinal Cord Injury.

The SLVHCS has also expanded programs to provide additional services to those in the community and in their homes. Home Based Primary Care, Respite Care, and Community Adult Day Care are just a few or our expanded services designed to bring services to veterans. As well, the SLVHCS is one of two national sites for a Hospital at Home Program, which provides intensive medical services to veterans in their homes for the purpose of minimizing or reducing hospitalization. The Care Coordination Telehealth Program is another expanded program, designed to allow veterans to transmit personalized vital signs, e.g. blood pressure, diabetetic sugar levels, to and communicate with nurses from ones home, thereby, reducing the need to come to a clinic for services.

Mental Health Services have also expanded to include specialized Mental Health Programs including Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Homeless Services, Substance Abuse Treatment, home care for those with chronic mental illnesses (Mental Health Intensive Case Management, MHICM), and a compensated work therapy program. Specialized mental health programs are now available in New Orleans at 2237 Poydras Street and 3426 and 3434 Canal Street; veterans may go directly to these locations or use a shuttle service from the main location at 1601 Perdido Street.
