SLVHCS hosts career fair for nurses, 100s attend
In an ongoing effort to strengthen its workforce in preparation of opening a new medical center, Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System held a career fair Feb. 4 in New Orleans.
Following the success of SLVHCS’ last career fair in August 2015, this hiring event was geared toward those in the nursing field, which is a major area of recruitment, said Luis Avellanet, Nursing Service chief.
About 300 potential employees attended the career fair. They learned about SLVHCS, the opportunities that are available and had an opportunity to speak with members of the Nursing Service leadership team.
“Nursing Service will experience an expansion of close to 536 new positions within the next 18 months,” Avellanet said. “We will still need about 300 more professional nurses to fill our ranks.”
Katina McGinnis, Human Resource specialist, helped coordinate the event and said the feedback from the participants were overwhelmingly positive.
“They loved that it was occupation specific; some stated that it made them feel special,” McGinnis said. “They also appreciated that we conducted on the spot interviews.”
She explained 38 in-person interviews were conducted that day and many others were scheduled for later dates.
The hiring event has continued to generate interest from applicants since the day of the event.
“I am still receiving calls from the applicants thanking me for hosting such an amazing career fair,” she said.
