What is the Fisher House?
The Fisher House is a free “home away from home” for Veteran families while their loved one is undergoing inpatient or extensive outpatient treatment at the New Orleans Veterans Medical Center. A family’s love is always the best medicine. When a loved one is injured or ill, the Fisher House unites families and relieves the financial and emotional strain of being away from home.

The 16-suite house features a common fully stocked kitchen, a spacious dining room, an inviting living room, toys for children and laundry facilities. Bedrooms offer either queen or full beds. Each room has an adjoining private bathroom with a shower and all rooms are equipped with a television and DVD player.

Fisher House guests use designated spaces in the patient parking garage located on S. Galvez Street.

The VA New Orleans Fisher House welcomes guests who:
  • have a loved one receiving care at the SLVHCS Medical Center or are receiving care at a local hospital authorized by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).
  • live 50 miles or more away or have a 2-hour commute from the Fisher House.
  • are actively engaged in the Veteran’s or active duty service member’s treatment plan.
  • are medically stable and able to stay in a non-medical unsupervised setting.
  • are willing and able to abide by all house guidelines and regulations including prohibition of smoking, weapons, alcohol or drug use.

No animals are permitted in the Fisher House except for service dogs.

How do families get referred for the Fisher House?

Fisher House guests must be referred by a member of their VA health care team (physician, nurse care manager, social worker, etc.). A referral is a request and will not guarantee a room reservation. Reservations are based on eligibility criteria being met and room availability. Rooms are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Each Veteran’s family will be allowed one private suite to share, with a maximum occupancy of four people. Children are welcome at the Fisher House but must always be supervised by the guardian checked in as a guest.

How can you help?

The New Orleans Fisher House depends on donations from individuals and groups to support its programs. Funds are used to provide cooking supplies, food items and personal items that family members use during their stay.

By donating directly to SLVHCS, you can be assured that 100% of your donation will be used to support the Fisher House.

For information about making donations, contact Voluntary Service at 1-800-935-8387, ext. 62105.
