Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System
Expanded vaccine eligibility under SAVE LIVES Act
April 7, 2021
NEW ORLEANS—The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System is providing COVID-19 vaccinations to Veterans regardless of their VA health care enrollment status, as well as spouses, caregivers and some beneficiaries.
Those eligible under the new law include
- all enrolled Veterans
- non-enrolled Veterans as defined in the new legislation, including those without service-connected disabilities and who have incomes above VA’s threshold
- spouses of Veterans
- overseas Veterans who rely on the foreign medical program
- Veteran caregivers who are enrolled in either the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers or the Program of General Caregiver Support Services
- Veteran caregivers enrolled in certain geriatrics and extended care programs, such as Veteran Directed Care, Bowel and Bladder, Home-Based Primary Care and VA’s Medical Foster Home program
- recipients of VA civilian health and medical programs
Eligible persons may come to the New Orleans Veterans Medical Center at 2400 Canal Street Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. On weekdays, the newly eligible should go to the eligibility office to register for the vaccine, then to the Veterans Physical Rehabilitation Gym to be vaccinated. On Saturday, report directly to the vaccine center in the Veterans Physical Rehabilitation Gym for registration and vaccination.
“Since the start of the pandemic, we have focused on vaccinating as many Veterans as possible,” said Medical Center Director Fernando Rivera. “Now, we can extend this life saving vaccination to the people who are most important in Veterans’ lives.”
The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System has administered over 47,000 vaccines to Veterans and health care providers since receiving the first vaccine shipment on December 14. By law, Veterans enrolled in VA care will still have priority. However, VA is working to gauge interest in vaccinations and secure a supply large enough to cover all who are eligible.
